People from all over Sweden where gathered in Gothenburg
for the yearly "intown" big air competition 'Chalmers
Big Jump Open' (CBJO) 2006. The first prices, which was
10.000 SEK (~€1.000), made alot of established riders
to make their way to Gothenburg aswell; teamriders and other
big freeride icons within the country. There was aslo a
few international riders there.
The registration got delayed; alot, which ended up in the
riders not getting the runs they needed at the practice,
which was scheduled for 1,5 hours. The inrun was made very
thin and people where going kind of random down it; ending
up at the side of the jump and beside the threes. The judges
decided to not let the skiers go switch on the whole event,
just because of the risks. If one skier would go switch
and make a good run, all the others would have been forced
to do it aswell, and that could be kind of messy standing
1 metre over a thin inrun with holes in the middle and trees
at the sides plus people standing everywhere near the inrun
with expensive cameras, etc.
So the event went off and people where putting on a good
show even though the jump was kind of small, but concidering
the place where it was built it was hell of a good job;
so the arrangement was without doubts very good. People
where not surprised with the people making it to the finals
in general, accept from Simon Ax (former winner at a world
championship contest) not making it. Simon missed the landing
on his first very nice performed spin and made a normal
backflip in the 2nd run which was not enough. The other
snowboarders where throwing very nice inverted spins with
stomped landings, and we all
know that beats the backflips. No worries though, Im convinced
that Simon will be back soon with killer results at other
events very soon.
The competition ran as scheduled and the riders where going
bigger and bigger for every run. In the finals some people
where experimenting while some rode more safe. Viktor Eriksson
(riding in the extremecover documentary) was pulling very
nice and stomped landings as always; so did Joonas Wikberg
and Kristoffer Edwall. Other skiers from the extremecover
documentary project at this
event was Rasmus Hammar and Christoffer Aldell, who both
reached the finals, even though some things could have gone
better for them. They will be back next time even stronger.
